“The How, Why and What of Nonprofits”12:00 pm – 1:00 pm
“The How, Why and What of Nonprofits” by Nikki Zeuner of the Wellness Coalition, Silver City Museum Annex, 302 West Broadway at 12 noon.
The presentation is part of the Museum’s ongoing series of free Brown Bag lunchtime presentations.
Ms. Zeuner states, “We will clarify what nonprofit corporations are, as well as why and how they first developed historically. Then we will take a closer look at our community: Nonprofits play many roles in Southwest New Mexico – economically, politically and socially. We will present examples of GrantCounty organizations, what they do, how they are funded, and what impact they have. We will also discuss meaningful ways to get involved in nonprofits as a board member or volunteer. Participants may ask any questions they have ever had about nonprofits”.

City of Rocks Monthly Observations5:45 pm – 8:00 pm
Gene Simons, publisher and CEO of four Pennsylvanianewspapers and a printing company, came to Faywood,NM at 62 to try his hand at ranching. While ranching, Gene wrote many ”Think About It” columns for local press and authored the book Cows & Columns. He passed last May at the age of 96. What you may not know is that it was Gene who donated the 14 inch telescope located in the roll-top observatory at the City of Rocks State Park so that we could all enjoy the Universe.
Silver City Astronomy Society member Matt Wilson, who does the monthly observations for the public with that scope, tells us the scope and observatory may be moved to some location in Las Cruces if attendance doesn’t improve at The City of Rocks site. We cannot afford to have that happen and that’s not where Gene wanted it to be. How can you help? By attending some of these observations.
Cost is the $5 day fee to go to the City of Rocks, plus a little gas. But the skies down there are DARKer than in and around Silver City. Matt is quite good at doing these observations, Viewing starts around sunset. Times posted do not necessarily apply.
Upcoming observing dates for 2013 are as follows.
Jan 5th, 12th, Feb 2nd, 9th, Mar 2nd, 9th, Apr 6th, 13th, May 4th, 11th, Jun 1st, 8th, 29th, Jul 6th, Sep 28th, Oct 5th, 26th, Nov 2nd, 23rd, 30th. Dec TBD.For directions, see: www.emnrd.state.nm.us/SPD/cityofrocksstatepark.html
