WILL Lunch & Learn: Segregation and Discrimination @ WNMU Global Resource Center, ABC room | Silver City | New Mexico | United States

“Segregation and Discrimination: Grant County Hispanics and Anglos During the Last 150 Years” by Stephen Fox The Silver City Museum is celebrating its fiftieth anniversary this year. For an exhibition that opened in June on Grant County fifty years ago, I was asked to do some research on the history of segregation and discrimination here. The project has expanded from that point. I gave an earlier version of this talk to the Unitarians in March, bringing the story down to the visit by the Brown Berets in the fall of 1971. This longer iteration winds up in the present day. The highlight is El Reportero newspaper, a fortnightly produced by Gregorio Mesa and Luis Quinones in the mid-to-late 1980s: the most sustained homegrown Hispanic protest over conditions as they were, and the only bilingual newspaper in Grant County. It annoyed a lot of people–but in general they were people who deserved to be annoyed. Even today, some individuals bristle and shut down when El Reportero is mentioned. It remains a defining moment in Grant County history.

The Gila National Forest is currently undergoing a plan revision, something that hasn’t happened in 30 years. As a part of the plan revision, the Forest Service is required to look at recommending areas for Wilderness and Wild & Scenic River designation. For the past four years, Nathan and a team of dedicated volunteers have been out on the ground conducting inventories of these lands and waters that they believe qualify for protection. Come learn about some of the wildest places left in the Gila, and ways that you can get involved. The meeting is free and open to the public. Refreshments following the program. Why the Most Effective Nonprofit Leaders Advocate for their Missions and those they serve?

For many nonprofits, there is often confusion and misinformation about what advocacy is and what is allowed (and what is not) under IRS charitable rules and regulations.

Come learn:

–  The difference between advocacy and lobbying

–  Why advocacy is more critical for nonprofits today than ever before

–  How to ensure that your nonprofit is advocating on behalf of its mission and those you serve, without violating IRS charitable regulations

–  Tips for building a realistic and effective advocacy strategy

Who should attend?

–  Nonprofit directors and managers who engage (or would like to) in advocacy efforts

–  Nonprofit board members and volunteers who are passionate about the mission of the organization for which they serve

Facilitator: Lisa Jimenez is a senior consultant to the Nonprofit Resource Group, a program of The National Center for Frontier Communities, and is a career advocate on behalf of nonprofits, their causes and those they serve.  She has organized and directed numerous issue-specific advocacy campaigns on behalf of low-income communities in Chicago, and specializes in media advocacy to support policy change.

Nov 24 – Nov 25 all-day
SW Women's Fiber Arts Collective's Holiday Fiber Art Sale @ Silver City Woman's Club | Silver City | New Mexico | United States

Save the Date – SW Women’s Fiber Arts Collective’s Holiday Fiber Art Sale

A Holiday Fiber Art Sale will be held on Friday and Saturday, November 24 and 25, 2017 from 10 am to 5 pm at the Silver City Woman’s Club located at. The sale is sponsored by the SW Women’s Fiber Arts Collective.

The sale was such a success last year, that we have expanded to two days this year, states board member, Jean Hill. We are very excited to have a longer sale since so many community members look forward to purchasing their holiday gifts from our members.” All of the items for sale are high quality, and handmade by the artisan selling them. Items include weavings, knits, hand painted silks, quilts, quilted items, wall hangings, tapestry weavings, fiber art tools and more! “What is so wonderful about this sale is finding a unique gift for every budget. We have some quilted items by Lynn Welsch, an award winning quilter, for under ten dollars, and also weavings that sell for hundreds of dollars. There really is something for everyone,” says board member Charmeine Wait.

A small fiber art exhibit will also be available for viewing and many of the artisans also demonstrate at their booths. There is no admission fee, so this is a great way to learn about fiber art,” states Wait.

The Southwest Women’s Fiber Arts Collective (SWFAC) was founded in March, 2005. We are a grassroots, all-volunteer, non-profit 501 c (3) organization with the goal of stimulating and supporting successful cottage industry in the southwest. The organzation meets every two months and has learning programs throughout the year.

The SW Women’s Fiber Arts Collective’s mission is to celebrate fiber art and realize its economic potential. To accomplish this, we nurture and empower both novice and skilled artists and enrich the community by fostering opportunities to experience, learn and earn. Please see our website, www.fiberartscollective.org for more information about our organization and to learn about becoming a member.

Learning Circle: The Top 10 Things That Make a Great Nonprofit @ College Street Plaza Suite #5 | Silver City | New Mexico | United States

Are you ready to expand your expertise as a leader, share your experience with key issues that affect nonprofits and engage in dynamic conversations to support you in your current role? If so, then the NONPROFIT RESOURCE GROUP’S LEARNING CIRCLES are right for you.

“The Top 10 Things That Make a Great Nonprofit” gives nonprofit leaders a chance to share the characteristics an organization needs to go above and beyond. Is it a specific practice? A type of outlook? A vision? Or could it just be commitment to the cause? This is an opportunity to meet with your peers and hear their insights into what works for nonprofits at our LEARNING CIRCLES.

Our LEARNING CIRCLES are designed to accomplish three goals: (1) to build constructive, engaged peer learning around challenging topics; (2) to enhance leadership skills, and (3) to form new, coordinated alliances. The content is customized to address the needs of each group as they engage to achieve the goals of each participant. Leaders meet for 90 minutes either in person or remotely (by videoconference via ZOOM). Leaders can attend one session or all four.

LEARNING CIRCLES are made possible by the generous support of the McCune Charitable Foundation.

For more information, please contact Kendra Milligan at (575) 597-0035 or NRG@swchi.org.
